Hi Folks,
Some people have been asking for an update on progress for the new Snorkel Guide for Eleuthera so thought I'd post publicly rather than try to answer each individual request. Progress remains steady, but slower than anticipated. We (Jessica and I) decided to become temporary custodians for a young lady, a refugee from Guatemala, who is seeking asylum in the United States. Her care, and helping out with her current legal case, has consumed more time than expected and the book has taken second fiddle to that more pressing effort.
That doesn't mean I'm far behind, but definitely not on schedule. I'm currently processing the 240+ photos that are candidates for inclusion in the book. That will be followed by a partial re-write of the stories that accompany each location along with a deep edit by a native Bahamian author that I have hired. The last piece will be to finish writing and editing what is known as the front matter. Those are all the helpful pages in the front of the book that everybody skips over to get to the more meaty stuff.
Once all that is done we start the assembly. All of the driving maps and directions, snorkel maps, database of important information, photos, copy and front matter go to my sister to lay out into the design that we already finalized several months ago. From that point I get it back and we do a painful proofreading process to make sure nothing got lost/changed between edit and layout. That back and forth can sometimes take 4 to 6 iterations.
So, the long and short of it is that I think going to print in March is a reasonable goal with first copies released to the public in April. First edition will contain 39 snorkel locations, somewhat short of my initial goal of 50, but most of that was driven by the weather, which did not want to cooperate.
Best to all,
Bret
