Fishbone Beach Bar and Grill is one of the few places that stays open during H season. They run tours, weather permitting, but the bar and grill are usually always opens except Sundays. The food is excellent, the vibe is chill, you can buy original art, or play darts! I've been there so many times on this trip that it feels like my second home.

Plus, Julius is a nice guy. I hope this works well for him and his family.

We really enjoyed our time with Captain Bubba and his family! We had lunch there one day while making arrangements for a tour. The food was really good and we loved talking to him and his family. After our fishing trip several days later, we had another wonderful meal. We wanted conch salad, and he made a run to get fresh conch for us! You can't get any better service than that! He also has amazing artwork that he painted for sale. Coming back to Eleuthera in November and plan to spend more time there

The Rakine clan is also very pro Disney as in they want Lighthouse Beach turned into cruise port for Disney Cruise Line

Julius is for Disney's plan and with not an unreasonable argument. Some Bahamians, him included, aren't as interested in preserving landmarks as they are on capitalizing from them in some way especially when they don't see or use them themselves. It's somewhat akin to me, who lives in NC, taking a keen interest in preserving a potential port in Florida. LHB is 50 miles south. Somewhat out of sight, out of mind.
He simply said if not Disney then who? If not now then when? He doesn't believe that One Eleuthera has the money to pull off their proposal. He also believes that the property owner has the right to sell their property to whomever they choose. He sees it as a chance. And, it may be the only chance he sees in his lifetime.
While I personally don't share the same opinions, I also don't have the same concerns nor the family considerations that he does.
Mr. Rankine sees this as possible one-time opportunity that shouldn't be missed.

Unfortunately this may affect his tour & restaurant businesses. Central area tourists may look for other tour operators who are not pro-mouse. Already hearing grumbles.

Yup, I agree DH. Who knows what the impact will be? The same thing that is scaring some is what is motivating others...a change and the unknown.
Mr. Rankine is no dummy and I respect his opinion. I don't agree with him for other reasons, but I can see his points.

Hi gentleman, doesn't Julius work out of Savannah Sound? I am just curious why this family has a taken such a strong stance on disney developing Lighthouse.
Geography aside, if Princess Cays has not proven to be a significant economic boost why do they think disney will be any different?

I think it has to do with why keep doing the same thing and expect a different result? Things are difficult economically, and if you don't at least make an attempt to do something then things will stay difficult. That's my interpretation of his opinion. You would have to ask him yourself to get a more clear answer.

But Bret what boggles my mind is that going WITH Disney is exactly "doing the same thing and expect a different result". Cruise ship passengers spend much less than stayover tourists. I
t doesn't appear much has changed in the south since i was last there in 2011. What does it take to get a few more businesses, restaurants, vacation rentals up and running down there? I am honestly asking because I know I couldn't just up and start a business right now unless I had some cash. But One Eleuthera has stated that they will give business grants.

I'm not trying to defend the pro-Disney folks, but I can understand how someone who runs a tour business/service on an island that attracts less than 1,000 tourists (even less during H season) a month would be salivating over the possibility of 40,000 a month via cruise ship. The folks who fly to Eleuthera don't necessarily go there specifically for LHB and they will still go as long as Disney or One Eleuthera or whomever doesn't mess with the reason they come, which is to have some peace and tranquility.
What is missing from the south (and elsewhere on the island for that matter) is something that draws people there along with transportation. The island has always been limited by flight capacity, which is similarly limited by demand. These little resorts that crop up every now and again are not reason enough to go to Eleuthera. Therein lies the problem.
OE, from what I understand, doesn't have enough money to buy the property. How are they going to provide business grants? And, what would those grants be used for? Eleuthera isn't Field of Dreams. You can't just build it and they will come. Ask DH. Some of the reasons he likes Eleuthera are it's hard to get to, it's loaded with biting insects, and there's nothing to do. Not exactly what your average tourists wants.
